New Mediclinic gets clever with storm water and concrete block pavers.
The extensive and state-of-the-art facility built for Mediclinic in Stellenbosch, proudly opened it’s doors in 2019. The new clinic made use of advanced technologies when designing the building, with focus on environmental impact and stormwater run off. Concrete block paving was the material of choice in the design, which ultimately looked at diminishing the impact of the water shortages experienced in the Western Cape.
Open Grid Concrete Block Paving Allows for Water Retention For Re-use
Standard stormwater run-off fails to allow for any retention of water and submergence of rain back into the ground. Solid pavements, walkways and parking areas also prevents water from seeping back into the ground. By specifying open grid concrete block paving from C.E.L. Paving products, Mediclinic made provisions for retaining all rain-water for re-use in the clinic and gardens.
Grassblock Effectively Used in Parking Areas
C.E.L. Paving’s Grassblock was used in the parking areas around the new facility. This open grid permeable concrete block paver allows for vast amounts of rain water to pass through the parking surface, where it is then diverted to a dam at the bottom of the property. The dam adds a visually pleasing aesthetic to the external areas at the Stellenbosch facility, while also offering an attenuation pond for the clinic.
Brownstone Coarse Exposed Aggregate Paver for Pathways
In addition to the Grassblock, the architect opted for C.E.L. Pavings’ Brownstone Coarse Exposed Aggregate paver for pathways. In addition to the exposed aggregate concrete block pavers, the design also called for cobbles from the C.E.L. Pavings wet cast range.
